Club History

The Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club (also known originally as the Waterbury Sportsmen's Club) is a non-profit organization located in Waterbury, Connecticut with the sole purpose of fundraising monies through a variety or events, campaigns, sponsors, special sponsors and other generous donors throughout the Greater Waterbury area to help provide opportunity for student-athletes in the Greater Waterbury area who wish to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

The Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's was established to formally honor the contributions of the many outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators, teachers, mentors and supporters of the Greater Waterbury athletic programs; which includes but is not limited to any individual with a demonstrated interest and/or extensive history within the Greater Waterbury Athletic Programs and/or community. The club has been active for over 44 years and has raised and distributed over $800,000 in scholarships since the club's inception back in 1975.

Founded by George Michael Warren, The Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club has also honored over 125 members of the Greater Waterbury community who have coached, educated, volunteered or stood out in the community with the Greater Waterbury youth. The club also recognizes many Special Olympians each year through the efforts of various groups and organizations throughout Greater Waterbury, such as the WARC and the Watertown Special Citizens group.

The Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club also honors certain individuals and organizations each year for their respective efforts in the community. The three distinctive awards given out are the Patriotism Award, the Community Service Award, and the Organization of the Year Award. The Organization also honors recently deceased members of the club and also in the community with their annual Program & Book Dedication. The club also honors one of it's own each year with the Jerry D'Ambrosio Sportsman of the Year Award, which is awarded to a member of the club who best exemplifies the characteristics of the late Jerry D'Ambrosio, a long-time member of the Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club who dedicated countless hours to the youth of Waterbury and the community overall.

In addition to their own efforts, the Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club has also collaborated with the 1900 Club of Waterbury and The Christopher D. Corbett Foundation over the years to award even more scholarships to those deserving student-athletes within the Greater Waterbury area.

The Greater Waterbury Sportsmen's Club generates it's monies through a number of events each year which include but are not limited to an annual Pig Roast, Ziti Dinner, Awards Dinner at the Aqua Turf, and the Annual Awards Dinner Program Book which is distributed each year at the dinner with all of our generous donors and sponsors.
